Project Controls Engineer

Project Controls Engineers are responsible for managing all aspects of Planning, Cost Management / Reporting, and Document Control within a Project. The role also ensures that the required management systems and processes are in place to comply with company project controls. 

About this role

Typical duties

  • Manages and oversees project controls for engineering and construction projects including project planning and scheduling, cost estimating and monitoring, and quality review and control
  • Manages project controls personnel
  • Establishes operating policies to mitigate project and financial risk
  • Provides guidance and consultation for project managers
  • Manages complete project finance and budget activities, and tracks and reports on project finance to management
  • Plans and executes management / software support systems, resources and staff to support project activities
  • Conducts vendor and internal audits to review accuracy, quality and completeness of database records and documents
  • Prepares monthly progress and cost reports
  • Creates control budget and reviews and authenticates cost reports and change notices
  • Manages functional staffing plans and hiring of project controls personnel Implements and manages cost control processes to report on estimates, expenditures and cost commitments accurately
  • Reports any breaches of safety procedures to supervision / management
  • Actively participates in and promotes company health and safety campaigns, policies and procedures, and ensures personal safety and that of colleagues at all time

In the industry

Project Controls Engineers have an essential role to play in leading project controls teams in ensuring that design, construction and major maintenance projects are completed safely and within budget. They are found in a variety of organisations including the Operators who own or manage production installations, major Engineering Contractors, Drilling Contractors and specialist service companies. The role is often based in an engineering or site project office, and may also involve regular tips to new construction sites and / or existing production facilities to undertake site visits and to check on progress.

Requirements

Entry requirements:

  • Degree/HND or equivalent in an engineering or business-related discipline
  • Experience in a project controls role
  • Experience in project planning, cost control and document control
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good IT skills
  • Good organisation and administration skills
