Production Supervisor

The Production Supervisor is responsible for managing the overall production operations associated with an oil and gas installation, which could be an offshore platform or vessel, or an onshore production terminal.  Monitors and controls all oil and gas production, utilities and safety systems to ensure that production targets are achieved in a safe and efficient manner.

Typical duties

  • Manages and controls the daily activities of Production Operators / Technicians
  • Ensures all production operations are carried out in a safe manner
  • Liaises with onshore production support engineers regarding production issues
  • Ensures the effective working of the Permit to Work system
  • Solves problems caused by production outages
  • Ensures that production losses are minimised
  • Ensures the production plant, processes and equipment are functioning efficiently
  • Reports any breaches of safety procedures to supervision / management
  • Actively participates in and promotes company health and safety campaigns, policies and procedures, and ensures personal safety and that of colleagues at all times
  • Provides support as part of the installation emergency response team

In the industry

Production Supervisors may work directly for an operator or a major contractor, and normally report to the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) or Onshore Terminal Manager (OTM) depending on the type of production installation. Or may report to a Production / Operations Superintendent on larger installations. Works closely with other installation supervisors and liaises with onshore operations, production and maintenance support teams, vendors, contractors and specialist companies.

Entry requirements:

  • Recognised Trade Apprenticeship and/or NVQ/SVQ Level 3 certification or equivalent and/or OPITO / ECITB Technician Training Scheme
  • Basic offshore induction and emergency training (BOSIET)
  • Offshore Medical Certificate
  • OPITO Minimum Industry Safety Standards (MIST)
  • Experienced in the operation of computerised production management systems
