Materials Controller

Materials Controllers can work as part of either an offshore or onshore logistics team and are responsible for providing a materials management service to the company and ensuring materials and equipment is in the right place at the right time.

About this role

Typical duties

  • Arranges for the delivery and despatch of goods and materials
  • Ensures materials and equipment have necessary certification
  • Ensures stores / warehouse / yard personnel are aware of deliveries and that space is allocated for goods on arrival
  • Chases up suppliers to ensure goods and materials are delivered on time to meet the needs of the business
  • Maintains the Materials management system
  • Prepares reports on materials receipt and delivery and on supplier performance
  • Acts as a focal point for suppliers and internal departments for questions about materials scheduling, problems, etc.
  • Reports any breaches of safety procedures to supervision / management

  • Actively participates in and promotes company health and safety campaigns, policies and procedures, and ensures personal safety and that of colleagues at all times

In the industry

Materials Controllers play a key role within the supply chain process in ensuring that materials and equipment are available at the right time to support offshore and onshore operations and projects. They are found in a variety of organisations including the Operators who own or manage production installations, major Engineering Contractors, Drilling Contractors, service companies, equipment suppliers, and specialist transportation and logistics companies. Offshore based Materials Controllers will be expected to work on a shift basis, which may have early starts and late finishes.

Requirements

Entry requirements:

  • Previous experience in logistics
  • Good organisation/administration skills
  • Good office IT skills
  • Driving licence
  • Experience of using a materials / maintenance management system, SAP, etc.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Employers might also look for:

  • HNC/HND in Business or Administration related topic (or equivalent)
  • Awareness of requirements for transportation of hazardous goods
  • Experience in a similar role within the oil and gas industry
  • Familiar with materials management system, SAP, etc.
  • May be working towards CIPS membership
