Barge Operator

Barge Operators are responsible for the operation of marine management systems required on Floating production installations and other large vessels such as oil and gas Tankers. A key role is ensuring that the ballast loading and stability of the vessel is maintained depending on specific marine operations such as loading or offloading of cargo.

Typical duties

  • Undertakes first line maintenance where qualified or assists with maintenance work on marine systems
  • Maintains the ballasting, trim and stability of the vessel
  • Coordinates the mooring and unmooring of shuttle tankers and cargo offloading operations
  • Ensures that the marine control room remains manned at all times
  • Monitors vessel status and reacts to changes in vessel systems
  • Supports the development of company marine Operations Procedures and training scenarios
  • Support the development of the Company competency management system for the Marine Team
  • Reports any breaches of safety procedures to supervision / management
  • Actively participates in and promotes company health and safety campaigns, policies and procedures, and ensures personal safety and that of colleagues at all times

In the industry

Barge operators provide a specialised skill set to the Oil and Gas Industry. Their primary role is watch keeping in the marine control room and ensuring that vessel position is maintained and controlled and integrity of all vessel systems are operated in a safe and efficient manner. They can be based on a range of ships, tankers, vessels and Floating Production Storage vessels. They are normally employed by specialist major vessel operating companies, marine contractors or supply vessel operators.

Entry requirements:

  • BTEC HNC/HND in an engineering or marine related subject
  • Basic offshore induction and emergency training (BOSIET)
  • STCW II/1 OOW Qualification Tanker Endorsement (Oil) DP Certification
  • Offshore Medical Certificate
  • OPITO Minimum Industry Safety Standards (MIST)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Good IT skills
  • Good organisation and administration skills
