Young Engineers & Science Clubs

Young Engineers & Science Clubs Scotland

YESC’s primary aim is to encourage the uptake and enjoyment of Science, Engineering, Maths and Technology, both in and out of the school setting.

Over 500 clubs exist across the UK in primary and secondary schools, running predominantly in lunchtimes and after school. A huge variety of kits are available to those schools who register with clubs, including two supported by OPITO: ROV Mate (5th & 6th years) and Hydrocarbons in Action (P6/7 & S1).

  • ROV Mate – pupils design and build an ROV which is then tested as part of national competition at Robert Gordon University. The winning team then go on to the international final. Teams are sponsored and mentored by Subsea 7 & BP.
  • Hydrocarbons in Action – this initiative gives pupils hands-on access to the activities of an oil and gas company from exploration through to refinery and making plastics. The project is supported by BP and the Scottish Oil Club.

Some of the activities include:

  • Seismic exploration
  • Core sampling
  • Porosity and absorbency
  • Soil & mineral analysis
  • Subsea exploration
  • Crude oil analysis
  • Making Plastic

The kit also contains rock and fossil samples, oil product samples, DK Eyewitness Oil book and full teacher notes.

For more information on either of these projects please visit the Young Engineers and Science Clubs Website or contact Aileen.Thow@opito.com
